| Description: At the height of the port's prosperity in the 1950s some 6000 lighters carried cargoes to and from the docks and wharves of London. This photograph shows a group of lightermen with several lighters moored immediately behind them. To the left of the picture, another man sits on top of a cargo of deal planks. In the distance, two steam vessels are moored in Greenwich Reach, surrounded by yet more lighters. |
