Title: Boys from Snowfields School in Bermondsey.
Description: Although London was the richest city in the world, surveys in the 1890s found that about 50,000 malnourished school children, around 7.5 per cent of the total, were living in the city in 1904. A government committee found that a sixth of London schoolchildren were underfed. In 1890, one of Charles Booth's researchers, found these children 'sitting limp and chill on the school benches', 'puny, pale-faced, scantily clad and badly shod'.
