Description: The Gas, Light and Coke Company started building Beckton Gas Works in 1868. On completion it was Europe's largest gasworks. This photograph shows the partially built works during a visit by members of one of the professional societies of engineers (presumably, the Society of Mechanical Engineers) in September 1869.
