| Description: Charles II was a notable patron of science. In 1670 he founded the Royal Society - still the premier scientific body in Britain and in 1675 founded the Royal Observatory at Greenwich for the improvement of navigation and astronomy. In the same year he appointed John Flamsteed as the First Astronomer Royal. |
