| Description: This shows a Royal Navy vessel - the man-of-war - in pursuit of a pirate vessel. Thousands of pirates were active between 1650 and 1720, and these years are sometimes known as a 'Golden Age' of piracy. Pirate ships usually carried far more crew than ordinary ships of a similar size - the extra men would take over any captured ships. Pirates also altered their ships so that they could carry far more cannon than merchant ships of the same size. |
