| Description: William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931) spent some years as a young man working from a barge used as a floating studio, drawing and painting the River Thames and the vessels he saw upon it. Thames barges usually carried a crew of three - a skipper, a mate (often under the age of 21) and a dog to act as security! Spritsail barges evolved with a very simple rig, despite their size, which could normally be easily managed by just two people. |
