Description: Cook had been given permission to chart the coast of New Zealand if he failed to find the southern continent. The only other European voyage to have touched new Zealand was Abel Tasman's in the 1640s - over a 100 years before Cook. Tasman had sketched a small portion of New Zealand's west coast. Cook's chart of New Zealand was still in use nearly a century later.
