| Description: One of the first Englishmen to live in Goa was the Jesuit priest, Father Thomas Stephens (1549-1619) who left Europe in 1579 and spent the rest of his life in Goa. His letters to his family in England were one of the factors leading to the formation of the English East India Company in 1600. Father Thomas Stephens was the first recorded Englishman to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa while on route to India. This was the period when Goa was described as “Golden Goa” and “Rome of the East”. |
