Title: A model of HMS Endeavour. Description: The ship on Cook's first voyage, 1768-71, was a Whitby-built collier called the 'Earl of Pembroke'. She was chosen for her strong construction and large carrying capacity. After being fitted out for the voyage at Deptford in 1768 she was renamed the 'Endeavour'. She carried square sails on all three masts, in accordance with navy practice. A ship rigged in this way is known as square-rigged or ship-rigged.
