| Description: Rainey's depiction of Jewish immigrants arriving at Irongate Stairs, published in 'Living London' (1901-02), edited by George R Sims. Many immigrants and other travellers, particularly the poorest, landed at this spot. As Irongate Stairs had no pier, people were transferred from ship to shore by boats. The original Irongate Stairs stood roughly where Tower Bridge was built. |
