The Parting Cheer, by Henry O'Neil.

© National Maritime Museum, London

Repro ID: F3201
Title: The Parting Cheer, by Henry O'Neil.
Description: An emigrant ship departing, with family and friends waving at the quayside. Although the emigrants hoped for a better life overseas, the departure was still a traumatic moment for them and their friends, and many in the crowd are overcome by their emotions. The ship in this painting is probably sailing to New York, the destination of most British and European emigrants. The acquisition of this painting was supported by the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the National Art Collections Fund and the Friends of the National Maritime Museum.
Creator: Henry Nelson O'Neil (1817-1880)
Date: 1861
Credit line: National Maritime Museum, London.
