| Description: A plan of the City of London by Marcus Willemlz, showing the devastation caused by the Great Fire of 1666. The parts destroyed by the fire show up as blank patches in the built-up area. An inset shows an artist's impression of the fire. The explanatory text is in German, French and English. The fire started on Sunday September 2, and much of medieval London was destroyed within five days. St Paul's Cathedral, over 80 churches and 13,200 houses were destroyed. Despite the huge destruction, only 6 people are definitely known to have been killed. However, it seems likely that the actual death toll was much higher. |
