| Description: The 'Princess Alice' was due to stop at North Woolwich Pier after returning from Gravesend. Having passed Tripcock Point, she was run down by the collier 'Bywell Castle'. An estimated 640 people died. Instead of greeting their friends or relatives, those waiting at the pier faced the ghastly ordeal of seeing the bodies being brought in. |
