| Description: A head-and-shoulders portrait of Handyson, a Greenwich pensioner. The Greenwich pensioners were supported by the Royal Hospital for Seamen founded at Greenwich by Queen Mary and William III in 1694. Handyson is wearing the characteristic tricorn hat of the uniform of Greenwich pensioners, who were a part of Greenwich's community until the hospital's closure in 1869. This is one of a number of oil sketches by Burnet for his painting 'Greenwich Pensioners celebrating the Battle of Trafalgar' now in Apsley House (Victoria and Albert Museum). |
