Description: A drinking fountain in Whitechapel High Street, erected to commemorate the late King Edward VII. As the inscription states, it was 'erected from subscriptions raised by the Jewish inhabitants of East London, 1911'. By such means, many Jewish immigrants sought to underline their loyalty to their new country. This was important at a time of growing hostility to what many British people saw as an 'alien' element.
