| Description: A striking image of the north (City) side of the Pool of London. This photo was taken from London Bridge - the best window into the workings of the port for ordinary Londoners. From the left, the picture shows the Fresh Wharf, Cox's Quay, Hammond's Quay, the Nicholson and Botolph Wharves, and the fine Victorian Billingsgate Fish Market. In the 1930s, the first two were replaced by the New Fresh Wharf, which became the most prominent of the north bank wharves.
There are several vessels, including steamers, a Thames barge and the usual clusters of lighters. |
