| Description: Police and strike-breakers, known as 'blacklegs', on board the Shipping Federation's vessel 'Lady Jocelyn' (1852) during the 1911 dock strike. The strike had been called by the recently formed National Transport Workers' Federation (NTWF). The union wanted a wage increase to 8p an hour, improved conditions and formal recognition of all unions. The Port of London Authority, backed up by the dock and shipping companies, resisted the demand. After a two week strike the dockers were forced to return to work. |
