| Description: A busy shipping scene in the South West India Dock, c. 1880. At the height of the port's prosperity some 6000 lighters were engaged in carrying cargoes from the docks. This remarkable photograph supports the claim of London lightermen that they were often able to walk across the docks, by jumping from the deck of one craft to another. |
