| Description: This illustration was originally published in Dore and Blanchard Jerrold's work 'London: A Pilgrimage' (Grant & Co., London, 1872), a collection of 180 engravings that form a comprehensive portrait of 19th-century London. The book included horrific illustrations of life in the port areas that shocked public opinion. Dore's work, alongside Jerrold's commentary, left people in no doubt about the degradation that existed in the East End. Dore's work also appeared in the 'Illustrated London News'. |
