| Description: The SS 'Cornish City' discharging grain at the Royal Victoria Docks in April 1926. According to a note on the photo, 7048 tons of grain were unloaded in 28 working hours. This was a huge advance on traditional methods of handling grain. From the early 20th century, the Royal Victoria Dock had become a major centre for London's imports of grain. Several major flour mills were located there, but this grain, having been discharged into lighters, was probably destined for one of the riverside wharves. |
