Title: General view of the new docks at Millwall.
Description: During the 1860s, the Millwall Freehold Land and Dock Company purchased 200 acres of marshland on the Isle of Dogs, slightly to the south of the West India Docks, and constructed a dock. The 36 acres of impounded water opened for business in 1868. Millwall Dock was built in the shape of a reversed 'L' with an entrance on the west side of the Isle of Dogs. The complex also included a dry dock, the first of its kind to be built by a dock company in London.
