'Which London dock played a vital, but secret, role in the D-Day campaign?'
Answer: The East India Import Dock This was one of several sites in the country chosen for the construction of 'Phoenix' caissons. These were prefabricated concrete blocks forming part of the Mulberry harbours, which allowed easier unloading of troops and supplies after the Normandy landings. The Robert McAlpine Company built eight caissons at the East India Dock, and another two further down the Thames at Erith. A Phoenix caisson under construction. © NMM
