Mrs Rose |
Harriet Rose, Mum, was born in 1850, making her 51
in 1901.
Her father was John Ransom, a ploughman who worked
for a farmer. Harriet grew up in a village in Kent.
At 16, Harriet came to work in service as a maid
in Lewisham. She met George Rose at Blackheath Fair in 1868. She married
George in 1874, when she was 24.
Harriet and George lived in Deptford for 17 years.
They have five children, Alfred, Albert, Margaret, Amy and Henry. They
moved into 27 Little Thames Street ten years ago, after George’s
uncle Thomas died.
Every summer, Harriet’s brother Fred brings
her baskets of fruit from his small farm in Kent, and she makes jams and
pickles.
