Mr Rose (Dad) |

Mr Rose |
George Rose, Dad, was born in 1846 making him 56
in 1901.
When he was 10, he started helping his Uncle Thomas,
a lighterman who worked on boats on the river Thames. At 16, George was
apprenticed to his uncle. After he had been an apprentice for seven years,
George was free to work on the river for himself. He worked for other
barge owners until he inherited the lighter Louise from Thomas
Rose in 1890, and now he works on his own account.
George married Harriet in 1874, when he was 28. Mr
Rose has worked on the Thames and travelled through London on the river
almost every day for over 40 years. He knows a lot about the history of
the river and the city.
