Cousin Edith was born in 1885 making her 16 in 1901.
Edith is the daughter of Harriet’s brother
Fred.
Edith was born and grew up in Kent. When she was
a child, she worked on her parents’ small farm.
She weeded the vegetable plot, fed the chickens,
and picked fruit. Now she is staying with her aunt Harriet in Greenwich.
Edith hopes to get a better job than she could get
at home in the country. She goes to evening classes three nights a week
to learn tailoring and dressmaking.
She earns her keep by helping her aunt run the home,
cooking, cleaning, washing, mending, and ironing for nine people.
