Two paddle steamers
Two paddle steamers at Greenwich Pier
Part of the Greenwich Local History Library collection.

The boats carry posters which are still familiar today: the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Madame Tussauds and Colman’s Mustard among others. In the background you can see new factories on Greenwich Marsh. The paddle steamers in the photo may be in use as ferries. In 1901, the minutes of Greenwich Council noted that they tried to set up a proper passenger steam boat service but had failed, even though it was “so important to the interests of this Borough.”
