Factory chimneys send coal smoke across Bugsby's Reach

In 1885 some of the factory chimneys on Greenwich Marsh had already been sending out smoke for over 30 years. By 1901, smoke from many more factory chimneys, both east and west of Greenwich, must have settled on houses in the town whichever way the wind was blowing. Council minutes note that thick black smoke from the Thames Ironworks Shipbuilding and Engineering Company’s boiler works at Deptford Pier was a particular nuisance. The Blackheath and Greenwich Electric Supply Company's chimney on Greenwich Marsh produced yellow smoke, but was an equal nuisance.
