Sculling a skiff past St Paul's Cathedral

The lighterman's apprentice got to work early. He rowed out to the lighter, and got it ready for the day's work. Then he rowed back to shore, and waited for the master to arrive. His next job was to row the lighterman to the lighter, to start the day’s journeying. By rowing back and forth on the river in a small boat, the apprentice learnt about the complex currents and tidal flows in the Thames.
