The lighters Samson, Fox and Edinburgh
The lighters Samson, Fox and Edinburgh

Six lighters and their steam tug are neatly moored opposite the Custom House. A number of sailing barges and another steam tug are moored on the north shore, leaving the middle of the river, with a steady tidal flow, free for traffic. The small figure in the hold of one of the lighters could be a child looking for scraps of cargo to take: anything edible or sellable was a valuable trophy. The Custom House is still there today: you can walk past it on the Riverside Walk.
