In 1901, school teaching was a job which was often done in a very traditional way. Some teaching still relied on copying, repeating, and learning by heart. In this log book for 1901, Mr Watts reports that a school inspector had advised teachers to spend less time making the pupils spell words out loud, letter by letter. Instead, they should be allowed to write more. Mr Watts notes that he himself uses both methods of teaching. New colleges for training teachers had begun to develop new ways of teaching. Teachers were encouraged to get children interested in what they were learning. Then, as now, people argued about the best way to teach children in school.
