Instructions in cookery. Part of the Greenwich Local History Library Collection. |
A turn of the century recipe book (often called a receipt book). A
cook on a fishing smack would have cooked porridge, cocoa, tea with condensed
milk, meat stews, fresh fish and suet puddings. The crew (usually about
five men), had to be well fed to make up for the cold, the wet , the hard
work, the danger and the lack of sleep. Fishing trips usually lasted about
a week. |
