A postcard
A postcard sent from Greenwich to Lee.
Part of the Greenwich Local History Library collection.

The writer has used pencil, perhaps because it was waterproof and smudge-free and cheaper than pen and ink. Not many people had a telephone, so a postcard was the quickest way to send a message from one borough to the next. This note was post-marked in the evening (12.15am), and probably delivered early the next day. The stamp for a letter cost 1d, but only ½d for a postcard.
