Grammar glossary: what words do

Object pronouns
- me - you - him

A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun. Use a pronoun instead of saying a noun twice. Here are some pronouns

  me you  
  him her it
  us them  

Use these pronouns after a verb, or after a word of place or time.

Use me when you talk about yourself. "Please help me read this letter."

Use me when you write about someone talking about themselves.

  Right Granny said, "fetch me my slippers, please".
  Not Granny said, "fetch Granny my slippers, please".

Use us when more than one person talks about themselves.

  Right Scott and I went to the harbour
and people asked us to dance.
  Not Scott and I went to the harbour and people
asked Scott and I to dance.

Use you, him, her, it, us, them instead of saying a noun twice.

  Right Granny, this letter is for you.
  Not Granny, this letter is for Granny.
     
  Right Scott told David to go to the harbour with him.
  Not Scott told David to go to the harbour with Scott.
     
  Right Scott took David to the harbour to find a job for him.
  Not Scott took to David to the harbour to find a job for David.
     
  Right Granny asked Margaret to read to her.
  Not Granny asked Margaret to read to Granny.
     
  Right Margaret opened the letter and read it.
  Not Margaret opened the letter and read the letter.
     
  Right The fishing boats arrived with men and
women aboard them.
  Not The fishing boats arrived with men and
women aboard the fishing boats.
