Description: Vice-Admiral Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) was the commander of the first convict fleet sent to Australia. He was appointed the first governor of the new colony of New South Wales. Captain Phillip had set sail on 13 May 1787 from Portsmouth with 11 vessels, the 'Alexander', 'Lady Penrhyn', 'Charlotte', 'Scarborough', 'Friendship', 'Prince of Wales', 'Borrowdale', 'Fishburn', 'Golden Grove' and the Royal Navy ships HMS 'Sirius' and HMS 'Supply'. Phillip arrived in New South Wales with 717 convicts of whom 188 were women, guarded by 191 marines under 19 officers.
